I enjoyed lots of exciting activities on Kapiti Island from snorkelling to bird watching.
The waters are intensely clear with diverse oceanic habitats which are an uncommon occurrence. There are two distinct regions on Kapiti Island comprising the North End and Rangatira. The Department of Conservation issues a permit to stopover at either area. Try to plan your trip in advance to avoid any trouble with the permits.

Kapiti Island is nowadays one of the key sites for bird recovery in New Zealand. Quite a few birds including the takahe, stitchbird, saddleback, brown teal and kokako have been shifted to Kapiti.

On my trip, I realized that the island is also the dwelling of a dense population of resident and aquatic birds. Rangatira is a division of Kapiti Island with the island’s highest point, Tuteremoana which offers breathtaking views along with amazing photo opportunities. Trekking up to the peak takes approximately 2 hours on the tracks. Wilkinson Track is a sturdy path whereas Trig Track is steeper and necessitates lots of fitness to pass through.

I glimpsed lots of birds in the forest including kaka, weka, kereru, bellbird, takahe and tui. The North End has a few hiking trails such as Okupe Look Walk, Lagoon Walk and Boulder Bank Loop Track. To reach the island’s northern coastline set out on The Lagoon walk. The Okupe Look Walk entails a trek through the forest towards the north-western point. The Boulder Bank Loop is located along the northern shoreline around the Boulder Bank.

I glimpsed spectacular scenery in the underwater vista in the Kapiti Marine Reserve in the Wellington region. When you set out snorkelling you can discover the rocks near the Kapiti Island coastline. Scuba diving is the most satisfying activity on the northern and western end of the Island. The protected reef, boulder foundation and sandy base habitats are the abode of a rich range of marine life.

If you visit Wellington via New Zealand campervan rental a stopover at this small island sanctuary is a must. The exclusive bird life and its nearness to the city makes this heavenly destination a must visit spot.

Visit Kapiti Island with Camper van hire NZ however you cannot take the vehicle on the island. Yacht services operate accredited trips around the reserve and Kapiti Island from Paraparaumu Beach. This is an ideal spot for a day trip from Wellington with a Hire Campervan.
