About Stonehenge Aotearoa
Don't worry, it's not your eyes deceiving you after coasting out of a local winery; it's Stonehenge - in the middle of the Wairarapa.

Stonehenge Aotearoa isn't just a full-scale working model of its namesake on England's Salisbury Plains. This working structure has been designed and built on its exact location near Carterton to record nature's seasons and celebrate the winter solstice or Matariki (Maori New Year).

Astronomy is the oldest of sciences, essential to the survival of early communities of every culture.

Opened in 2005, Stonehenge Aotearoa has already hosted solstice festivals, weddings, birthdays and, with its fabulous acoustics, musical events.

Viewed from the centre, the henge stones mark the daily rise and set positions of the sun, moon and stars. Through audiovisual displays, you can learn how Maori, Polynesian and Europeans lived, farmed and explored the world with signs and messages hidden in the night sky.

On spring, summer and autumn weekends, there are dedicated Kiwi astronomers on hand to guide you around the stones.

Bring out the mystical in yourself with a visit to this great monument, and feel the power and peace of nature as the shadows lengthen across the solar clock and the sun sets over the Wairarapa hills.

Stonehenge Aotearoa is a Private Facility, set in a tranquil setting on Private Property. Bookings are essential.
